The State of UK Offshore Wind

The UK’s offshore wind sector has reached a landmark milestone: 25 years of commercial offshore wind power.

It is impressive to see how far the industry has come since its early beginnings, from just two modest turbines anchored off the coast of Blyth in 2000 to a high-tech industrial powerhouse with nearly 3,000 turbines operating at sea today. By mid-2026, offshore wind isn’t just an additional component in the UK’s energy strategy—it has become a central pillar keeping the lights on, driving the energy transition, and helping us leave things better for future generations.

Right now, offshore wind consistently powers nearly a fifth of the UK’s total electricity demand. That accounts for around 52 terawatt-hours of clean energy every year—enough to power roughly 15.5 million homes. When combined with onshore wind and solar, clean energy now accounts for over 54% of all UK electricity generation. It demonstrates that renewables are delivering the heavy lifting on the national grid while keeping tens of millions of tonnes of carbon out of the atmosphere.

Looking at current figures, there is approximately 16.65 gigawatts of connected capacity across 46 active wind farms. The momentum ahead is even more significant: when accounting for operational sites, active construction, and early-stage planning, the total development pipeline stands at 93 gigawatts. A major driver of this progress is Contracts for Difference Allocation Round 7, which secured a record 8.4 gigawatts of capacity—making it Europe’s largest offshore wind auction to date. In addition, over 11.4 gigawatts are actively under construction, including flagship projects like the Dogger Bank Wind Farm using high-voltage direct current systems to transport power efficiently back to shore.

Complex, high-risk projects like these come with critical deadlines, tight programmes, and live environment challenges where uncertainty cannot be an option. Progress isn’t powered by engineering alone—it’s powered by partnership, trust, and engineering certainty. Delivering cost certainty, maintaining uncompromised safety controls, and applying a collaborative One Team approach are essential to ensuring these major infrastructure assets are brought online safely and efficiently.

As shallow-water sites reach capacity, the industry is moving further into deeper waters. The UK recently awarded seabed rights for 4.5 gigawatts of floating offshore wind capacity in the Celtic Sea, positioning the region at the forefront of floating wind technology. To support these floating structures, essential port infrastructure is undergoing key developments. Cromarty Firth in Scotland is expanding its deep-water port capabilities, while Port Talbot in Wales is being transformed into an advanced floating wind hub.

Achieving the national benchmark of 43 to 50 gigawatts of offshore wind by 2030 will require focused execution to bridge the gap from today’s connected capacity.

To reach these targets, three strategic priorities require focus:

  • Accelerated Grid Expansion: Infrastructure on land must be fast-tracked to ensure generated power reaches consumers without grid congestion bottlenecks.

  • Supply Chain Discipline: Consistent annual auction rounds (targeting roughly 5 gigawatts per year) provide the long-term visibility local manufacturers need to scale up blade and turbine production with confidence.

  • Investing in People: The UK supply chain supports around 2,000 businesses and 40,000 jobs, a figure projected to exceed 90,000 by 2030. This sector continues to deliver regional re-industrialization, skilled career development, and lasting value across coastal communities in the East Coast, Scotland, and South Wales.

Over the past quarter-century, UK offshore wind has evolved into a mature, vital sector powering critical infrastructure. With a 93 gigawatt pipeline and technical expertise in floating wind, the UK remains well-positioned to support the energy transition and deliver certainty for the future.
